Old Growth Western Juniper

East of Dorris Brothers Reservoir, Devil’s Garden,

Modoc National Forest, California, November 2013

On the Devil’s Garden of the Modoc National Forest east of the Dorris Brothers Reservoir is a nice example of an old growth juniper community.

For several years, we have been looking for old growth juniper woodlands on the Modoc National Forest  that have not been impacted by illegal wood cutters. East of the Dorris Brothers Reservoir we thought that we had finally found one, but unfortunately, wood cutters had already been there and cut down eight of the oldest juniper. Even so, this woodland is still lovely and well worth visiting if the woodcutters would just leave it alone from now on.
