Old Growth Western Juniper

Antelope Plains, Devil’s Garden Ranger District, MNF

Sage Steppe Ecosystem Restoration Project

Modoc National Forest, Modoc County

Proposed February 19, 2015

The measuring stick has six inch increments.

The understory of the old growth juniper woodlands within the Antelope Plains Project that we have seen is in remarkably good condition. The low sage, bitterbrush, forbs and native grasses are thriving. Invasive annual grass was mostly present only under some old juniper trees where loafing cattle have extirpated most of the native flora and disturbed the natural duff present under most old trees. This is a Gallery of Wildflowers blooming in and around some of the old growth woodlands within the Antelope Plains Project.
